Adjusting the Aspect Ratio of Upscaled Images with Custom Zoom in Midjourney

Written by XEN Create | Jan 8, 2024

Midjourney's default 1:1 aspect ratio is a perfect match for social media posts. But what if you need something more suited for a website background or other formats? Don't worry, we've got you covered!

Previously, we introduced the Panning feature in our blog 'Midjourney Levels Up, Say Hello to Panning!'. Today, let's dive into another handy tool: the Custom Zoom feature. Ideal for when you have a specific aspect ratio in mind, like the widescreen 16:9 or the portrait-friendly 4:5.

Here's a simple guide to using Custom Zoom for changing aspect ratios:

  1. Create your prompt. Example:

tech abstract background, blue and orange color palette

  2. Choose your image and upscale it using the U1, U2, U3, or U4 button.

  3. Click the 'Custom Zoom' button after upscaling.
  4. In the pop-up, tweak your prompt by adding '--ar' for the aspect ratio and adjusting the zoom to 1. In this example, we used '--ar 16:9'.

  5. Midjourney will regenerate your image in the new aspect ratio. Select and upscale your favorite version.

Prompt: tech abstract background, blue and orange color palette --v 5.0 --ar 16:9 --zoom 1

  6. Here's another example where we changed the aspect ratio to 4:5.

Prompt: tech abstract background, blue and orange color palette --v 5.0 --ar 4:5 --zoom 1
